CAAM-HP Receives Formal Recognition from the UK Government

UK Government recognises CAAM-HP as the official accreditation authority for New and Developing Medical Schools in the British Overseas territories in the Caribbean. In a letter to the Executive Director of the CAAM-HP, the Overseas Territories Department informed that,

“…following a change to UK legislation in 2003, the General Medical Council (GMC) no longer has jurisdiction for accrediting medical schools outside the UK. An alternative body had to be sought to provide the necessary oversight and regulatory framework. After a careful examination of the options, it has been concluded that CAAM-HP is the appropriate body to take on the role that was previously carried out by the GMC. This recommendation follows discussions with the GMC, Department for International Development and the Department of Health.

HMG policy on accreditation and endorsement of new and developing medical schools in the Caribbean Overseas Territories can be summarised as follows:

• HMG recognises CAAM-HP as the official accreditation authority for new and developing medical schools in the Caribbean Overseas Territories.

• HMG would endorse a new medical school for a listing in the World Health Organisation World Directory of Medical Schools and/or the International Medical Education Directory (IMED-FAIMER) once CAAM-HP is satisfied that the institution is ready to admit its first class of students and has issued initial provisional accreditation.”
